About this experience
One of the greatest engineering feats in road construction and the most famous section of the King's Road. But the Vindhella mountain pass is so much more.
At 13.30 you'll meet one of our skilled guides (not the same guide as in the stave church) and we walk up the east side of Vindhella to the top of the famous hairpin bends.
On the way, you will learn about the King's Road and the construction of the masterpiece that meanders on high walls down through the mountain pass. Hear about the road workers, about slave labor and punishment, about railings and stones, colors and kings.
Also learn that the Vindhella pass may have been a strategic point of defense and control in ancient times and the narrowest passage between east and west in southern Norway. Here is a hill fort, ancient defense facilities, and the site for an ambush by the medieval rebel army «Birkebeinerne».
After a while at the hairpin bends at the top, the guide turns and goes back to the Stave Church. You can join, or you can go down to Rimskjold on your own or take the round trip across Sverrestigen back to the Stave Church. The guide helps you with the directions.
